January 2012
Our December general meeting is often sparsely attended—people are so busy around the holiday with parties and family commitments. This year, we had a handful of board members in attendance, along with two people new to PFLAG and in serious need of our support. It was such a good reminder for all of us how important it is for us to be present each month to offer our strength and experiences.
Please remember that all are welcome at our monthly meetings. I’ve heard so many people say over the years that they’ve thought about coming to a PFLAG meeting, but are a little uncertain about what to expect. We meet the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Unitarian Church in Lincoln. From 6:30 to 7 p.m., we have a social half-hour where people can enjoy a snack, check out our lending library and other educational materials, and catch up with friends, old and new.
The actual meeting begins at 7 p.m., and we always have some sort of presentation, usually 40 to 50 minutes, focusing on our mission to provide support, education and advocacy regarding LGBTQA issues. We break into smaller support groups following the presentation so that people will have a chance to share their stories and/or concerns with others who may have gone through a similar experience. You are more than welcome to share or to just sit and listen—there is no pressure to participate unless you want to.
We’ve got some great meetings planned for 2012, so I hope you’ll join us when you can and invite others to join us. We will be there waiting for you!
Shoshana Sumrall Frerking has decided to step down from the PFLAG Cornhusker board. We are so grateful for the many talents Shoshana shared with the chapter as newsletter editor the past couple of years and as a hard-working and passionate volunteer. Thanks for all of your contributions, Shoshana!
Happy New Year to all of our friends and supporters!
